An ESSIX retainer is a new "invisible" type of retainer (with no wires) that is custom fabricated for certain orthodontic cases after the completion of orthodontic treatment, or for minor orthodontic corrections.

The traditional Hawley type retainers (the type that has wires incorporated in it) and positioners to move teeth after orthodontic treatment are still needed in certain cases. However, the ESSIX retainers are like contact lens which are more esthetic and more comfortable (after an initial adjustment period) whereas the Hawley retainers are like the framed eye glasses, both having advantages and disadvantages.

Because the ESSIX retainers have been prescribed for you, the following information and directions are important:

ESSIX RETAINERS SHOULD BE WORN AS FOLLOWS:

(   ) 24 hours per day except while eating or brushing your teeth.
(   ) Night wear only
(   ) ___ hours per day

CARE OF YOUR ESSIX RETAINER(S):

  • A finger nail file (emory board) can be used to smooth any irritating part of the Essix retainer.
  • Clean your retainer(s) very gently each day. (mouthwash etc...)
  • Do NOT keep your retainer(s) in any place that is extremely hot or cold.
  • Remove your Essix retainer(s) to eat and clean your teeth.
  • Do not boil or soak your Essix retainers in hot water.

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING VERY CAREFULLY:
If you lose or break your retainer(s) a fee of $125, subject to price increase over time, will be charged for each retainer.

NOTE:
You will probably still have bonding cement/material on your teeth. Progressively, as the "gums" heal, we will remove this material. DO NOT immediately schedule with your family dentist to have your teeth cleaned.
