An
ESSIX retainer is a new "invisible" type of retainer (with
no wires) that is custom fabricated for certain orthodontic
cases after the completion of orthodontic treatment, or
for minor orthodontic corrections.
The traditional Hawley type retainers (the type that has
wires incorporated in it) and positioners to move teeth
after orthodontic treatment are still needed in certain
cases. However, the ESSIX retainers are like contact lens
which are more esthetic and more comfortable (after an
initial adjustment period) whereas the Hawley retainers
are like the framed eye glasses, both having advantages
and disadvantages.
